Second Future Forests Fellow Launches Research on Fire and Communities

PhD student Sarah Dickson-Hoyle is the second recipient of the Future Forests Fellowship, the largest award in the world for an incoming doctoral student in forestry.

The Future Forests Fellowship is made possible by a private Canadian foundation, which created it to draw attention to how forestry research impacts global issues. It is awarded to a student whose intended studies fit within one of the Faculty’s areas of excellence and who is starting their first doctoral degree.

Foundation Gift Supports Wildfire Research

The Intact Foundation will support valuable research into wildfire prevention and management, and climate change adaptation in British Columbia with a gift of $250,000 over three years. Led by Dr. Lori Daniels, the research project is in collaboration with the St’uxwtéws (Bonaparte) Band and the Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Restoration Society.

Future Forest Fellowship Changes the Landscape of Graduate Research

Sara Barron is equally passionate about trees and people. And as the recipient of the Future Forest Fellowship, she is dedicating her PhD research to both these passions.

Her research, which began in May 2013, focuses on the ways suburban forests can help communities mitigate and adapt to a changing climate, and how an understanding of related social preferences can influence the achievement of future resilient, low-carbon communities.
