Truck Loggers Association Supports Forestry Students for Over 50 Years

Every year at the BC Truck Loggers Association convention there’s a silent and live auction. Nothing unusual about that; lots of organizations raise funds this way. What’s different at the TLA convention is that bidders routinely pay at least twice what the auction item is worth, and gleefully outbid each other in friendly competition.

Research Forest Work Terms & Internships

An undergraduate student gaining valuable GIS experience and a graduate student researching the forest/community interface are two of the Forestry students benefitting from private foundation support of co-op work terms and internships at UBC’s Research Forests. This newly established private foundation gift has already supported work term and research opportunities for six undergraduate and three graduate students in our Malcolm Knapp, Alex Fraser and Aleza Lake research forests.

HALCO Software Systems Ltd., founded in 1988, celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year! To recognize this milestone, and in honour of their founder, Howard Arthur Leach, HALCO recently established a $5,000 annual scholarship in the Faculty of Forestry. The Howard A. Leach Scholarship in Operations Research will be awarded to undergraduate students in the Wood Products Processing program, who have a demonstrated interest in the field of Operations Research.

The Faculty’s most significant undergraduate student award has been established in honour of Phillip Tindle (ApSc 49) and his wife Katherine (BA 48).

“Please, call me Taddy,” Katherine says. “I’ve gone by that nickname my whole life.”

In their top-floor Vancouver apartment with gorgeous views of forests and mountains, Phillip and Taddy recently talked about their lives at UBC, Phillip’s career in forestry, and the importance of this new student award.

Research Fellowships Create Bright Future for Graduate Students

As the first recipients of two fellowships established by the estate of Paul and Edwina Heller, graduate students Suzi Malan and Zac Zabawa are continuing vital research on environmental and conservation governance in Africa and India.

Suzi is pursuing a PhD, investigating the political, socio-economic and ecosystem management aspects of decision-making in the establishment and management of protected areas across national boundaries.

New Award Supports Transfer Students From China

A Scholarship Ceremony was organized by the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada on March 21, 2012 to recognize and celebrate the partnership between the Shanghai United Benefit Enterprise Group Ltd. (UBG) and UBC Forestry. This event was specially organized to recognize UBG’s contribution towards the United Benefit Group Fujian Forestry Scholarship. This is the first time in the history of the university that a mainland Chinese company has endowed a scholarship that funds mainland Chinese students to study at UBC.
